AI Search, Zero Clicks, And You!

Summary

Zero click is when a search is made but the user finds the answer before clicking on a website. The effects of zero click search results are still unclear, but online advertisements and social media is a proven method to help your business stand out.

What is a Zero Click?

Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile

A zero click is a web search that ends before the user needs to click onto a website. For example, when searching “restaurants near me”, the Google business profile (example on right) appears before the websites. Business profiles commonly have a lot of relevant information, and for many users that is all that they need (read more about profiles here). Another significant factor is the recent surge in AI search results redirecting website traffic away from the original source. For instance, when a user searches a question about a topic or a local business, Google Gemini answers it before the user has a chance to click on a website. This prevents the business from gaining any benefit from the user search traffic.

Recent data suggests that in the first four months of 2026, 68% of Google searches ended without a click. For every 1000 Google searches, only 232 end in some form of click. Not every click necessarily went to a website either; some went to images or even Google’s AI mode. This specific data is sourced from the United States and was posted June 8, 2026. Why Does This Matter?

With the search results providing more information, it is more important than ever to keep your website content current and accurate.

Having your website reviewed by AI is a double edged sword. On one hand, it makes your content more visible to users who are searching for information and services that your business may offer. But on the other hand, it is also less likely that users will actually interact with your website/content. Less users viewing your website directly reduces the customer engagement, and potential business.

Another method to encourage website traffic is online advertisements and social media. They draw interest into your business’ brand directly and help you to stand out. Since the data on the effects of zero click searches is still evolving, it is currently unclear how this will change in the future.

Interesting to Note.

Canada stands as a slight outlier in the gathered results, with statistics similar to European countries that have legislation in place that influence the results. Canada landed in a middle-ground between the US and many EU countries, with only 63.8% of searches ending without a click.
